Notably, in addition to their impressive ships, Vikings are also synonymous with their exceptional weaponry. Indispensable on looting incursions and for self-defence, they were an important part of the everyday lives of Scandinavians. A variety of familiar weapons demonstrate how warfare was waged one thousand years ago. Archaeologists discover them in Viking-era graves, lakes, near fords, and battlefields. Each find is a small piece in the large jigsaw puzzle of Viking warfare.

Various types of weapons were utilized during the Medieval Age, including swords, axes, bows and arrows, lances, and spears. In addition to shields, helmets, and chain mail, the Vikings used a variety of other protective equipment in combat. Their ability to acquire weapons was contingent upon their economic status. While swords were the expensive weapons of the elite, axes and lances were affordable for the common warriors. However, different types of weapons and equipment require different methods of preservation. For example, fairly large counts of swords and axes have survived to the present day, whereas the discovery of helmets and chain mail is exceedingly uncommon. These items were crucial for raiding, self-defense, and battle protection.
