Collection: Viking Chess
Drakka offers you this amusing Viking chess, also known as Tafl or Hnefatafl, was regarded as the greatest strategy game of the Celtic and Nordic peoples during the Middle Ages and was laden with significance in Viking culture. In the last century and a half, successive excavations and surveys of Viking sites and burials have unearthed numerous examples and samples of Viking chess, both game boards and figurines, some of which are particularly ornate. Due to its presence in the tombs of numerous warriors, the meaning and symbolism attributed to the game have intrigued scholars the most. It appears that the strategic ability it demanded, an essential trait for those in charge of leading others in combat, explains this presence as a defining element or characteristic of the deceased's status as a distinguished warrior.

Are Viking chess and hnefatafl the same?
Also sometimes known as Viking chess, hnefatafl was considered the great strategy game of the Celtic and Nordic peoples during the Middle Ages, in addition to being charged with symbolism in the Viking culture.
What are the Viking chess rules?
All pieces move like the rook in chess: in a straight line for as many empty squares as the player chooses. Pieces cannot hop over other pieces or move diagonally. Capturing only happens when a piece is moved so that a single opposing piece ends up trapped between two of the players' pieces.
